Annecy From Zermatt to Annecy

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone knows if I can catch a train or a bus from Zermatt to Annecy without having to go all the way back around the lake to Geneva first? What companies do this?

Thanks!

No.

Even the lowest passes leading out of the Mattertal valley (where Zermatt is) are glaciated.

The only way to get out without going all the way down to Rhone valley is on foot and with considerable glacier hiking experience.

Actually you SHOULD theoretically be able to do this via Sion, Martigny, Chamonix, St Gervais Les Bains, Sallanches, St Pierre en Faucigny and then Annecy on Swiss/French trains. Whether it is faster than going to GVA and then to Annecy is the other question - check with the Swiss SBB. http://www.sbb.ch or write to them because even when I put in Zermatt to Annecy via Martigny, it still routes me through Geneva.

Firechick,

I just tried the same but entered Chamonix in the Via field - because all the trains to Geneva run through Martigny too, it is rather unspecific... Anyway, it is over 7 hours through Martigny-Chamonix and over 6 hours around Lake Geneva. If you have enough time the connection through Chamonix is surely more scenic and worth another hour, but if the time is limited - well...
