Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Choquequirao Anyone been here?
Posted: Mon June 16, 2003 09:59 AM UTC
I stumbled across this place suring research and it sounds fantastic. The only problem is, it is so far off the beaten path that it seems like you can only do on a tour to get to it. Has anyone been to it? If so, how did you get to it and was it worth it?

Most tours seem to suggest that you hike for three or four days out of Cuzco and get to it and somehow get a bus back. That would lead me to wonder whether you can get transport out and back. I will have only limited time and 4 days of trekking will make it impossible. Cheers in advance for any help.

It must not be that good since i have never heard about it and i have lived in peru for 28 years. You better change your plans.

First I must admit I have not been there.
Choquequirao (or "cuna de oro/cradle of guld) is situated (almost) along the touristic road from Cusco to Abancay, also called "Circuito Micaela Bastidas". You will have to leave near Abra Socllaccasa (highest point +4000 m) for Cachora. Thereafter the road seems to be small, but will lead you to Choquequirao after passing river Apurimac (C. is on the east side of A.)
You will have to arrange transport from Cusco or from Abancay.
Distances to Choquequirao from Abancay is around 35 km and from Cusco around 120 km.
Near Abra Socllaccasa is Ruinas de Sayhuite (famous stone: La Piedra de Sayhuite).
I have no further information about tourist offices or such in Abancay, but my advice is to take a public transport to Abancay from Cusco, stay there one night to have a full day for the excursion, and then hire a taxidriver for one day from Abancay, making necessary visits to all places you wish to see around in these region.
From what I see, the region around Apurimac and Abancay seems full worth visiting and I wish you good luck and I am waiting for your coming pages on Choquequirao.
If your goal is to only visit Choquequirao, you can make it easy directly from Cusco I guess, hiring a taxi for one day. Ask at a tourist agency, they surely can get a driver for you to reasonable cost.

Thanks very much for your help - I'll have to see how easy it is when I'm in Cuzco.
