Freiburg im Breisgau Studying in Freiburg
Posted: Sun May 28, 2006 02:29 AM UTC
Hey Everybody. I am going to be going on an exchange to the University of Freiburg for the entire year (fall and summer session i.e oct 06-aug07) I have been looking around at many sites to find a nice appartment and it is a very hard task indeed. From my understanding with the exchange program that I am with, I cannot live in a dorm so I am looking for a nice 1 room apartment. I've looked at most of the sites that are mentioned on the freiburg university website but I just wanted to know if anybody knew of anything else? Cost also isn't a big issue (although the currency exchange from the canadian dollar to the euro sucks lol). Thanks.

That seems to me a strange exchange program, if they dont help you with acommodation. Renting an appartement without help before arriving in germany might prove very difficult.

Maybe you ´ve read this already on the university website: even if you cant get a dorm room officially, you could still try to rent one from a student who will be away for a longer time (for example for studying abroad). Contact the dorms administration (Studentenwerk), they sometimes help organizing this.

Ok the next hint is just a wild guess: there are fraternities (Studentenverbindung), who might be willing to help and offer a room. But be aware that in germany some (well most) fraternities are kind of rightwing. Better get information on them, before trying to get in contact.

An own apartment is hard to get for one year. However, many sudents live in shared flats where there is always a lot of coming and going. Often the Studentenwerk has an (internet) black board with the offers of free rooms in shared flats.

Did you try www.mitwohnzentrale.de?
A Freiburg student I know just went to work in England for some time, I'll ask her if she knows of any good places to search.
Why can't you live in a dorm? It's worth another try.
Which exchange program is it? They really should be able to help you.

The member who had asked this question never logged in again, but nevertheless the replies here can be helpful for someone else later. So I want to share this information I just received from the Freiburg student living in England now.
She says to check the website of the uni, click on "Studentenwerk" to find accomodation. She also recommends a newspaper called Zypresse for ads.
