| Kuwait | 24 hours in Kuwait. Posted: Wed May 24, 2006 11:11 PM UTC
What should I do or see?
I will be staying at Le Meridien. Is it easy to get around? Can I walk to different places? |

Le Meridien is by the Gulf Road in Bnerid Al Gar. It's not really close to anything of interest other than Kuwait Towers so you will need to take a taxi. Kuwait towers are probably one of the most famous landmarks in Kuwait and are actually water towers, but you can actually go up the largest one where there is a rotating observation platform as well as a restaurant with excellent views over the city and Arabian Gulf.
The old souks (tell the taxi driver to take you to Souk Al Mubarakia) in Kuwait city are worth a visit if you want to see the real Middle East. Here you can see spices, dates, fish, meat, clothes, carpets, etc. on sale in small shops. There's one area here commonly known as The Heritage Souks which sells antiques which is worth a browse, but beware, not everything is antique! Bargain hard. The Scientific Centre contains an aquarium, a childrens discovery place, Imax theatre and a nice gift shop in a rather fancy building. It is on the Gulf Road in Salmiya quite close to Marina Mall. Marina Mall is one of Kuwaits biggest shopping malls and is quite nice if you want designer stuff. You may find it a bit small compared to malls in the US. A glass bridge takes pedestrians from Marina Mall across the Gulf Road to Marina Crescent which is a large selection of cafes and restaurants set in a crescent around a marina. Souk Sharq which is further along the Gulf Road in Kuwait city has amazing architecture with fake wind towers, Islamic tiling, etc. and is also set against a marina. It is a nice mall although it does not have such a large selection of shops as Marina Mall. Look out for teh funky water clock in the main entrance hall! Beit Sadu is dedicated to weaving and you can see Bedouin women making various woven goods which you can buy. The area around a restaurant called "Beit Sabbah" (or "House Seven") is lovely as it is full of old traditional Kuwaiti buildings (a rarity here) that have been restored. The restaurant is quite nice and I believe there are a few more there now. www.kuwait-info.com/sidepages/tourism_placesofiterest.asp lists some more of the tings to do, most of which are a short taxi drive away. Enjoy your stay!
