| Grand Cayman | fresh water in caymans Posted: Mon May 22, 2006 02:48 AM UTC
Hi
Are there any natural fresh water streams, rivers or lakes anywhere in Caymans? How high the bills for water are, if you own a house or rent? Thanks for any help Simon |

Good question, and I really don't know, but since caymans don't often swim in salt water, I would guess that somewhere on the islands there must be at least some marshy water. The caymans are pretty small though...

There are fresh water sources in Cayman, but they are mostly underground. Individual land owners have sunk wells to use them. Generally water is quite expensive as a large portion is desalinated. I can't remember what my water bills were.

So why are the islands name Grand Cayman? Are there alligators/caymans running around now or in the past?

There are fresh springs but the not really drink able generally use for irigation. Water bills on a large 2 bed condo is about 50 CI$ a month. hope this help.

no they are named the Cayman Islands for being on top of the cayman valley. I think they might eve spell the crocs name different? not sure though.

There are actually several theories on this:
One is that upon discovery, the island was inhabited by huge Iguanas, that still exist here today, that resembled their larger lizard cousins and this is actually why it was called this. Interesting to note that the islands were originally called "Las Tortugas" which is spanish for "turtles" because of the abundance of sea turtles on and around the islands, which also still thrive here. They were later called "Caymanas". Another theory is that salt water crocs were here at one time but eventually died off or moved to other islands. There has however been no archaeological or historical evidence to prove this though, so theory #1 is probably more accurate.
