| Milos Island | Ferry/Hf Connection between Santorini and Milos Posted: Tue May 16, 2006 01:44 PM UTC
Hallo everybody, can anyone help me with ferry connections between Santorini and Milos on June the 23rd or the 24th?
I have tried the http://www.gtp.gr site but it doesn't seem up to date. Where can I find reliable Greek domestic sea transportation timetables? Thanks a lot! |

It's frustrating, isn't it? That's probably the best ferry website on the internet, but sometimes it just fails miserably. The Good News: When I look at that route for June I do find one highspeed ferry on Saturday the 24th of June, operated by "IJ" ferry company, departing at 9 AM and arriving at 11:30 AM. The Bad News: "This schedule is not officially approved yet." I think that the fact that this schedule is posted on the website is a good indication that it will be approved between now and then. You'll just have to keep checking back to see if it's finally 'approved.'
You do have another option, however, once schedules are approved. You can take the morning car ferry to Ios and then catch another ferry to Milos from there an hour or two later. Again, schedules aren't yet approved that will allow you to make this connection, but they're also posted on the www.gtp.gr website so you can at least keep track of any updates. Good luck!

This is first hand info, I have done the route before....Reliable information comes from the ferry agents on the islands themseves. GTP.GR is useful guide but it does not 'do' connections, comes from experience....
a) Look for a direct ferry Santorini-Milos. b) Use a ferry Santorini-Ios, and then a ferry Ios-x-x-Milos (This was the option I took). Notes: On Ios island on my last visit it was necessary to go around ALL the ferry agents in Gialos (the port of Ios) to find out the Ios-Milos ferries. This may change of course....

There are usually a couple of ferries between Santorini and Milos, most notably Ierapetra and Vitsenzos Kornaros, both of the shipping company L.A.N.E. You won't find them online in order to book your trip. Those two Cretan ferries start from Piraeus, go directly to Milos and continue on to Santorini, Crete and then a few other islands before returning along the same route.
In June, there is sure to be another fast small boat, the SpeedJet, connecting Milos, Folegandros, possibly Ios, and Santorini. Boat schedules get officially approved about a month in advance. Another option would be to make an intermediate stop in another island, waita couple of hours, and then catch a different boat to your final destination. This strategy requires some creativity, sorely lacking from the hurried travel agents. You may have to do your own research. :) Every year, for example, there is at least one High Speed line (in addition to the SpeedJet) between Santorini and the western Cyclades. In 2004, it was a Hellenic Seaways High-Speed Catamaran between Santorini and Milos, but in 2005 Sifnos replaced Milos on that route. Therefore, in order to get to Milos from Santorini the fastest way, you'd have to take the High Speed from Santorini to Sifnos, wait a couple of hours in Sifnos, and then take a different Higgh Speed (or the Speed Runner 1 catamaran) from Sifnos to Milos-a 45 minute trip.

Thanks a lot, I think I'll follow your advice and do my own research. I don't mind spending a couple of hours in Sifnos. If my flight timetable is confirmed I will be in Santorini Friday the 23rd in the morning, so I'll have plenty of time to look for the right connection at the port. If not, I will spend one night in Thira and leave for Milos the next day.
This is "vacanza" too!

Keep in mind, Milos is accessible by plane, as well, though not from Santorini.
For the record, there are two flights each day to Milos from Athens International Airport, at the lowest Olympic Airways domestic fare of 42 Euros one way. Check out http://www.olympicairlines.com/ for booking seats to Milos, and http://www.milosisforlovers.com for photos of the DASH-8 aircraft, Milos airport and a satellite map of the route.

Another course of action maybe to "corner" a travel agent (by email, if you cannot be there in person) and ask them the question: "I want to get to Milos from Santorini, via another island, by changing boats if necessary. How do I do that? For example, can I get to Milos from Santorini via Sifnos?" This kind of question would encourage them to think. Of course, the astute, organized travel agents with a keen sense of customer service and empathy toward their clientelle, would do this for you without having to be "coached" first. :)

Yes, I could try and "corner" a travel agent in Santorini via email, I don't know if this strategy would be successful, anyway, I have nothing to lose :-)
I know you can fly from Athens to Milos but I have a flight to Santorini, already booked and paid. Maybe next year I will go the fast way! It's less than 3 weeks now, I'm looking farward to be in Milos so much! Thanks again for your help!
