| Savona | Shuttle Milano/Savona/Milano Posted: Sun May 14, 2006 10:10 AM UTC
For an elderly couple, not in the best of health, late 70s, flying into Milan from Heathrow, what is the easiest and cheapest way to get from Milan airport to Savona port to join a cruise ship? Also the return journey 12 days later. Thanks.

Hi there. You catch a bus to Milan rail station and from there, trains go directly to Savona. An intercity train will take you 2hrs 15 mins, they leave every 2 hours and cost about €15. There are very regular trains on this route, but some may entail you changing trains in Genoa so the Intercities are best. From Savona station, buses run to the town.
You can book your train ticket online on www.trenitalia.com (change the language to English at the very top) or just buy your ticket at the station, and you can also buy your return ticket at the same time because the tickets are valid for 3 months. remember to validate your ticket in the yellow machines before you board the train. Check what airport your flight arrives in, as some of the cheaper flights arrive at Orio Al Serio which is actually closer to Bergamo than Milan. have a good trip

I'm cutting and pasting my previous answer to your question (from the other forum).
This should go in the Milan or Savona forums, but I'll do what I can. I suggest exiting Malpensa and taking the bus to Milano Centrale station. This costs about EUR 5. The trip into town takes an hour and drops you off at Milano Centrale train station. From here, trains for Savona leave about once per hour, usually at ten minutes past the hour (5.10, 6.10, 7.10, etc.). You should buy your train tickets from the automated machines, which are multi-lingual and speak better English than anyone working for Trenitalia. Look for a direct train that doesn't require a transfer in Genova. It is about EUR 15 for a 2nd class ticket and EUR 20 for a first-class ticket. Buy first class if you want to be in a quieter carraige with fewer people. I always go first-class for short trips in Italy, because it's more relaxing. Have money in your (zippered) pocket so that you don't have to pull out your wallet in the train station. It's just an extra precaution. Milano Centrale is a big station, and if you have the option of buying a ticket for a train that leaves in five minutes or a train that leaves in sixty-five minutes, I would always choose the latter. From the train station to the port in Savona, I would take a taxi. The driver will assist with luggage.

I was thinking.... why not to Nice? British Airways has direct flights both from Gatwick and Heathrow to Nice. From Nice it's quite easy to go to Savona by only one train, not far, about 150 km.. From Milan you should take at least two train if you don't change at Genoa.
From Nice to Savona by train there is beatiful scenario. It's just an idea...

Problem with Nice is that trains on the border don't always connect and nearly always you have to change platforms which entails carrying heavy suitases down underground passages. It's closer but could take much longer. For example I live 30mins from Nice by car. By train and bus it has taken me 4 hours to get home!
