| Riomaggiore | Train from Rome to Riomaggiore Posted: Sat May 13, 2006 06:27 PM UTC
I'm wondering if anyone has experience with train travel from Rome to Riomaggiore? My wife and just graduated college daughter will be spending 2 nights in Riomaggiore, arriving via train from Rome on June 9.
I understand that we will need to make a train change in La Spezia - while we are experienced travelers, I try to do as much advance "homework" as possible so as not to be met with unexpected surprises. Any tips, suggestions or personal experiences would be appreciated. Thanks, Bob |

I believe you already know www.trenitialia.com for timetable and fare...
Just a suggestions, trains from Rome are usually (not always) some minutes late, try to be early at LaSpezia. Ciao :-)

If they are spending 2 nights there they must be going to see the Cinque Terre. In La Spezia there is an office where they can buy a 3 day pass for the Cinque terre and from that moment on, their train to Riomaggiore, the train to all the other towns, the fee to hike on the paths, and the train back to wherever they leave from is all taken care of.

Train it to La Spezia and catch a local train from there. Trains to the Riomaggiore leave every 20 mintutes or so, but this is not guaranteed so check on the arrivals/departures board/s when you arrive and go from there. There is nothing to worry about as it's easy. The train to Riomaggiore takes about 8 minutes and when you arrive you may be in a tunnel (depending on where you are in the train). Get out and walk towards to light. You'll have to walk under the tracks in a tunnel to get out of the station and there will be the national park office on your right. Right next to that is the tunnel to the main street of Riomaggiore.
Book your accommodation before you go. I used Mar Mar, http://www.5terre-marmar.com, but there are other companies. I'll be making some pages in the next few weeks so hopefully these will help you.
