Chengdu going to live there
Posted: Fri May 12, 2006 10:22 AM UTC
Hello,

iam from Spain and after asking for a post as a spanish teacher in china and thailand, they chose me as a suplent for the post in the university of SICHUAN. which i assume it is the one in Chengdu but iam not too sure because i havent got any other info yet. i would only go if the person chosen decide not to go, but even so, i would like to know some things about the place

i asked for pekin so as you can imagine it took me a while to find out where this place was...it seems so far away from everything!!! iam sure it has its own charming and i have read lot of good comments about it but i would like to know how is the live there, things to do, the safety for a alone girl who normaly looks like 15years old and some of the prices for living, like the flats, food, cinema... i dont know, to get an idea

i would also like to know if people speak english there...iam a little worried to be absolutely isolated there (the post it would be for a whole year, with the chance to stay 3years in total)

thanks

i have been to chengdu and while itīs mabye not the prettiest city in china i found it to be one of the friendliest.
i was there for a couple of weeks and met quite a lot of local chinese there and really enjoyed the place.

there are also a lot of foreign backpackers passing through chengdu, so you can always run down to one of the many backpacker cafes if you feel like speaking to a westerner.

Hi,
Please don't go there as a friend of mine from Australia went to teach English and he did not settle at all. Find other places.

Chengdu is a charming city and historical as well. It's the capital city of the Hsu during th three kingdom. It's not as hectic n crowded as Shanghai or as chaotic as Guangzhou.I introduced my american friend to this city n he has fallen in love with this place eversince.keep a open mind n i am sure u will enjoy the opportunity to enrich your experience of China ,most populous province Sichuan with Chengdu as it's provincial capital. The food here is generally very spicy though..Ignore the last post...NO BASIS n based on hearsay.
Check my Sichuan page.

Just like other have already mentioned, Chengdu is a friendly city and ppl are very relaxed there. There are many teahouses where ppl play mahjong or simply chat. I talked to the locals while I was there and they were all very friendly. Chengdu is also close to many excellent outdoor attractions that are well known in China (and in the world), such as the panda center and numerous famous mountains. And it is the getaway city to Tibet. I think it is not as chaotic as the cities along the coast.

I would say that if the other person drops out you should TOTALLY do it! That area is really cool to live in..there are so many great places surrounding it that you could see so much of Chinese life tyhan if you were in Beijing. I live in Beijing and love travelling to the area you may be going to...the pandas are adorable, the teahouses are great places to go and meet people, yes, there are lots of backpackers travelling through so you could always be meeting new people and the food is so hot and spicy its terrific!!!!!

There are plenty worse places they could be sending you to..Sichuan is a great place!

It's the fourth largest city in China and growing very fast.
The first 3 economic powerhouse cities are Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou. (excl. Hong Kong)

If you like something more than just a top Chinese city life and pursuit of $$$$$, Chengdu is the place to have a lifestyle ! There are so many travel options too!! On top of the gorgeous food and nice people.
But being in the heartland, you have to expect you will encounter less foreigners and English-speaking people than in Beijing or Shanghai.
