Me and my children are planning to go San Salvador, rent a car, and visit the neighbouring countries. We are asking for tips and sugestions, And would like information from anyone who has done this before.

I didn't rent a car, but noone in El Sal drives after dark - this is very important. Not sure about Honduras (i would imagine so) but it applies to Guatemala as well. I myself just wouldn't bother with looking after a car in those countries - sticking to public transport keeps you way looser and in the crowd. I dont think it's a good idea to go far off the beaten track in a vehicle of your own, although the more rural you get the more you can relax. But if you do catch bad luck, you are truly screwed. Anyway, i think you are pulling my leg - you are 23-24 y.o. so your children must be very very young, you are not serious about all this car and salvador thing.

off course you can rent a car in El Salvador and country around.this is not so dangerous.do you speak spanish??.i live in Central America amolst 20 years i know all the country around.do not believe what poeple say.most of them stay cople week and live.they don't kwnow the way to move move around.those country are ok for traveling just you may need some friend or guide to help you down here.here this not more dangerous than USA.it is like eveywhere if you looking for trouble you gone find them.

All the major car rental companies (alamo, hertz, etc..) have offices in
San Salvador or Comalapa Int'l Airport and you can rent a varity of cars from them. You do need a written authorization from them if you decide to use the car outside El Salvador but that should not be a problem.

I have been to El Salvador 3 times and I have rented a car to move around
including at night without any problems, of course you do not want to go to
the dangerous areas of San Salvador...just use common sense and get informed
with a map and directions to your destination.
