I think a day is sufficient to visit Vatican (St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel) as long as you get there early or in time for the opening. Vatican is a country/state within Rome so you can stay within the city.

Hi You can see the Vatican Museums including Sistine Chapel in 2 to 4 hours, St Peters Cathedral another 2 hours or more. Welcome to view my Vatican City pages for more info.

'Vatican City' as far as tourists are concerned is St Peters Basilica and the Vatican Museum. They are next to each other, inside Rome. Both are excellent to visit and can be done if half a day.
