In your country is it a custom for an American husband to give the bride's father 20,000 yuan to marry her?

Do you know what the money for? If her father asked for himself, I have never heard of it. If it's for the expense of the wedding, that is really not too much.

Let me think....that's probably the price for one good mare.Ok,just joking ,in India the bride has to give substantial dowry to the husband, hence giving birth to girls are liabilities.I never heard of this custom of giving cash to the bride's father.

hi, i'm chinese indonesian -- in my custom there is no such thing as giving the money to bride's father.

there is a traditional ceremony before the wedding celebration, that the groom-to-be should give 'milk-money' to the bride's father, HOWEVER, the bride's father must ONLY take the money on top and bottom (say, you put 20,000 of 100 yuan notes in 1 stack). if he choose to take all, meaning he has agreed to sell the bride (his daughter) to you...

im a malaysian Chinese.. and we follow the traditional chinese wedding customs closely.. just like HK or Singapore etc.. the more traditional chinese families do follow this custom....

the bridegroom family will visit the bride family to negotiate for the daughter's hand... and things that will be negotiated will be.. how many banquet tables are offered to the bride's side during the wedding dinner.. how many crates of wedding biscuits are given ... (these biscuits are given to relatives when the wedding invites are handled out) .. this sumtimes includes some form of cash to the bride's family..

all the above is subjective n depend on the amount of face the bride's family want to get out of it... some wedding have been known to be calle doff bcause of uncompromising families... this happens even in fast paced n modern HK...

now moddern days.. things r simple.. we usually give some money that s acceptable to the bride's family...

i guess for you as a foreigner.. u just dun want to be taken for a ride... its up to u..

20,000 yuan is lunch money. it's normal to do that in china and america and everywhere; maybe africa. for the good gestures also for the pains and sufferings from raising his or her good and only daugher "possibility". actually to see how serious you are about marrying her or his daughter. if you can't even raise such little gift. maybe you can not take care of yourself and of his daughter. oh my god. that 20,000 yuan is considered a gesture and honor. for a good wife i am willing to pay alot more. consider all the girl here "san francisco, california" only like material and its costing me alot more than 20k of yuan. for the 20k and you will gain and have alot more for your life and yourself. it will open many doors. you wont regret it. - eddie2952@hotmail.com

20K RMB 15 years ago is alot of money but not now. You are very lucky man because the father is still 15 years behind. Quickly grab this offer. My friend marry a Shengyang girl, he has to provide a house and a car. Of course this girl is good and she is pretty too. The house cost him 473,000 RMB without renovation. All in all it may reach 650,000 RMB.
