| Newcastle upon Tyne | Moving to Newcastle Posted: Thu May 4, 2006 09:17 AM UTC
Hi there I am really keen to learn more about Newcastle as I am keen to move there from New Zealand with my wife and 3 children next year. Are you able to help? I am particularly interested in cost of living and how much a couple should earn before tax to live in modest comfort.
So I am particularly interested in hearing from couples with 2 or more children. We don't go out often and eat at home with self prepared food. I am in Civil Engineering so any engineer's out there in the area I would love to hear from you too. My email is hutchinsonwong@slingshot.co.nz Cheery Lawrence Thanks a bundle Lawrence |

Hi Lawrence
Can't be very helpful about Newcastle (except to say I've always found it a very friendly and lively place) but I wondered what is making you want to move to UK from NZ? I am currently looking at possibilities going the other way around - I would love to live in NZ but think it might be possible to spend half the year there and half here. Anyway, good luck with your move, and say "hi" to NZ for me please. Tissie

If you are able to find work as a civil engineer and earn a professional salary, you should be able to live comfortably. If your wife is also a professional, you should have no problems.
You can pay more or less what you choose for food in the supermarkets here. Some are cheaper than others. Again, for clothing you can buy cheap or expensive, depending on what you want. You can buy a large enough house within travelling distance of Newcastle for about £200,000 and upwards. Rental would start at £600 per month upwards. Newcastle is a vibrant place and the surrounding areas are full of history and interest. Newcastle is a city of culture. There are wonderful beaches within travelling distance. The weather is not always wonderful!
