Can anyone suggest cheap ways to travel between these 3 places? Any suggestions for things to do in the BAsque country?

Thanks

I easily could qualify as the unpaid director of the San Sebastian tourist bureau. It is an absolutely amazing place with one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The food alone is worth the visit. You don't see things as much as feel them.

Bilbao has little to offer except the Gugenheim and the hanging bridge.

We went in reverse order to yours. Because of the difficulty of going sideways across Spain by train, we looped up through France and saw Carcossone (a must)along the way. We didn't stop at Lourdes, which I now regret.

The Basque region includes areas in this part of France.

We went by bus (good connection) to Bilbao.

Alsa buses will provide cheap travel in the Basque Country. (www.alsa.es) There is a local rail service (FEVE) and the Spanish train service (RENFE) that will also provide connections. Barcelona is a long way by road or rail and time rather than cost will be the factor. It isn't in the Basque Country. I would say Bilbao is better than Barcelona which attracts too many tourists. Bilbao is developing as a city and is a lively place to visit. Out in the country local travel services in the Basque Country are good but infrequent and if you are reliant on them they will restrict you but around Bilbao the City's Metro and FEVE will give you plenty of options within the area. San Sebastian is worth a visit and further afield in Asturias there are the Picos de Europa with a number of places to see. The Basque Country is well worth exploring as part of Green Spain and the people are really friendly from my experience.
