Thanks for the answer, now I have another question? If I want to bring more do they charge a fee if you declare the amount. Is it better not to exceed that amount or does it really matter?

I think you should contact the Embassy of the people's Republic of China or one of the specialist travel agencies in your country. I am not at all sure that the figure of US$5000 is correct. I do know that only 6,000RMB may be imported or exported, which might affect the amount you take it, unless you plan on spending it all. www.chinahighlights.com/faq/1.html might be of help.

Thank you for your reply. I'm planning on moving to Chongqing so I wired some money and I wanted to carry some so I know for sure I'll have it. Thanks again for the info, I'll check. If you ever in Chongqing write me maybe we could get together for a meal. Allen
