Roatán Town Need new Roatan Info

We are planning a trip to Roatan in August 2006. Renting a house on the beach in Sandy Beach area. How are the beaches/sand fly situation? I have a friend who is thinking about NOT joining us becasue she read the sand flys are bad and the photos that she sees have empty beaches. Yes, she may be crazy, but I just wanted to check. Also, any good restaurant ideas? Thanks, Debra

Deb -

There will most likely be sand flies out and about. There is almost no way to avoid them. You may consider bringing some repellant with DEET to which they sometimes respond. There is also a Cactus Juice product sold on the island which I understand is a good control. Shoes, socks and long pants early morning and evening help as well.

The cure for empty beaches is to hit the West Bay area on cruise ship days. Then the empty beaches will be appreciated.

There are lots of great restaurants on the island. You may want to check out the Roatan Forums board at http://www.roatanforums.com/forums/

Sounds like a great trip. Have fun!

Unfortunately there are sandflies. Try the repellents mentioned in the previous post, Autan did not work when I was there. What I heard from other tourists (when I had already left, so I did not try it myself) is that normal baby oil applied generously on the skin helps - the sandflies slide off.
Enjoy You trip!
