Thanks for your replies - one more question. We are traveling from Santiago de Compostela to Bilbao and want to stay overnight somewhere along the way. Which town would be better to explore on a Sunday and stay overnight - Leon or Burgos?

Both cities are actually very similar: they are both important stops on the pilgrims' route to Santiago de Compostela, both with stunning Gothic cathedrals. They both have about the same population (under 200,000), and they even share the same extreme weather: freezing cold in winter, piping hot in summer. I am sure neither would disappoint you. However, I personally prefer Burgos. The old town is better preserved, stretching beautifully along the river, which I find very romantic too.
