I have the Juneau Capital Transit route map, but can't deduce from it whether the bus goes near enough to the glacier to see anything?

No, Juneau transit buses don't go to the Mendenhall Glacier - you have to walk almost a mile from thje closest stop. The buses from the cruise dock are only $5 each way, though.

Confirming what Murray said. Either walk the last part or catch the private buses at the cruise docks.

If there are 4 people traveling, it might be less expensive and stressful just to negotiate the cost of a taxi to Mendenhall Glacier and back. You could pay a little more and get in a few other local sights along the way. The only other possibility is the shuttle from the dock directly to the Glacier. Both options are readily available at the dock. If you dock near the tram, everything is right there. If you dock just outside, you take the free shuttle at the pier that takes you to the tram area.
