Hi

What's it like?

It's a volcanic island, lots of red and black rocks overlooking sparkling blue seas. The two most picturesque villages on the island, Oia and Fira, consist of whitewashed buildings clinging perilously to the edge of these rocks. If you're looking for a beach holiday, Santorini is far from your best option. There are beach resorts on the island, but the beaches are not sandy. 3 days on Santorini was enough for me (but I'll revisit the island again in future)....I'd have struggled to keep myself occupied for a week let alone a fortnight. However, there are other islands that can be visited from Santorini by ferry so if you're staying for a fortnight you might want to look into potential daytrips off the island. Be warned: August sees the island swamped with visitors.

What will the weather be like?

It'll almost certainly be hot and sunny. Maybe too hot for much strenuous sightseeing. It'll still be warm at nights too....so make sure you get accommodation with air conditioning!

Which is the best place to visit?

You can't go to Santorini without visiting Oia and Fira. Both are unbelievably picturesque and are the main reasons for visiting the island. In terms of beaches....I believe a place called Perissa has one of the better beaches on the island.

Is it expensive to eat out?

If you want to eat in one of the fancy restaurants overlooking the Caldera (the volcanic crater) at either Oia or Fira then YES, it can become expensive. But it doesn't have to be....venture away from the spectacular views and eat on the high street and you won't pay any more than on any other Greek island.

Enjoy Santorini if you do decide to go there!

Jonathan
