| Powell River | an autumn visit Posted: Sun April 23, 2006 09:47 PM UTC
Hi,
I've posted a few queries on the VT forum over the last few weeks. I'm planning my first visit to BC in August. I would like to find out if Powell River is definately worth a visit. I'd like to do some diving and hiking. I'm spending the first 3 days of my trip in Vancouver and then planning to spend about 10 days between Powell River and Vancouver Island. Any tips on places that I MUST see would be welcome. I'm landing on the 19th August and leave for the Rockies on the 31st so have some time to explore. Thanks Brendan |

check out this site
http://www.discoverpowellriver.com/ or google Powell River, or Sunshine coast, which is right beside Powell River, and a beautiful place to visit as well. Theres lots of hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, golfing, fishing and other fun activities like those in both places.

While the surrounding area is lovely Powell River itself is a hard bitten blue collar town with little to recommend it to visitors.
Vancouver Island is a much better choice.

In response to SamSalmon' comments, he obviously hasn't been to the region in a very long time. The area is a fabulous place to both live and visit. I moved here after 10 years of spending summer vacations here. If you like outdoor recreation this is the place to be. In addition to the fantastic hiking on the 180km Sunshine Coast Trail and the many other trails that make the area an outdoors enthusiast dream. There's also the 8 lake Powell Forest Canoe Route, the Knuckleheads Recreation Area and Desolation Sound Marine Park for the best Kayaking in the world as well as many provincial and regioal parks. The Mill which once was THE TOWN downsized long ago and the area is now a tourist mecca. The Marine area is a great district to shop for souvenirs or enjoy lunch or dinner on one of the many restaurant patios as you watch the ships pass by.
The community also hosts many festivals and events including the International Choral Festival Kathaumixw in July and the Blackberry Festival in August. Check out the website www.discoverpowellriver.com The site is older but it has great info on it.
