I have read that Chernobyl, the Russian rendering of Chornobyl, translates to the English word "wormwood." Is this so?

If not, how did Chornobyl get named?

chornobyl is the name of the grass. Maybe because of that.

It is, "Artemisia absinthium", according to dictionary "wormwood" or "sailor's tobacco".

It's the same grass as in "Apocalypse 8:11. And the name of the star is called Wormwood. And the third part of the waters became wormwood. And many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter. "

Cherno Byl' - is Black Truth. And, possibly, name originates in acient Russia.

No, cherno is black, but byl-býl-býlí is herb. Originating in old slavanic BYLI.

According to "Brief ethymological lexicon of Czech languge". Origin of old slavonic words will be same in Ukrainian or Russian language and Czech.
