| Kaiserslautern | travel kaiserslatern to milan Posted: Tue April 18, 2006 02:34 AM UTC
Hi guys,
I might need to go to Milan for a conference on 13-14 June and I'll be in Kaiserslautern on 12 June to watch Australia play Japan, which kicks off at 3pm German time so it'll end about 5pm. If I nee dto be in Milan the next morning how best do I get about getting there? I had a look on the web and it seems the nearest airport is in Saarbrucken but they have no direct flights to Milan and all leave at inopportune times on the 12th or 13th. I figure I might have to catch a train to frankfurt and go from there-any ideas? |

Did you check Ryanair, leaving from Hahn? They have a flight at 8:35 pm, which probably won't leave you enough time to get there from the match. There is another flight at 8:15 am.
There is also a night train leaving from Mannheim at 23:38, arriving in Milan at 7:45 in the morning. This may be your best choice. Check www.bahn.de

I'm a bit surprised that nobody has yet organized a bus shuttle between Hahn and Kaiserslautern during the World Cup. But couldn't find anything on this yet.
Thus without car it's not easy to reach Hahn from Kaiserslautern. I also think that the night train from Munich will be the most realistic option. You can book online here https://buchung.nachtzugreise.de The problem with Kaiserlautern is: it's the smallest venue city and many fans won't/can't stay there. Thus many will have to head after the match towards Mannheim. A route you have to take also when going to Frankfurt. There will be additional and longer trains - but there are limits on this. The signalling on this route does not allow a frequency like e.g. on the urban networks of big cities.

Thanks for the replies guys-Ryanair has a real cheap deal to Milan and depending on how quickly I can get to Hahn airport that might well prove the best way to get about it, but we'll see.

When you're considering Ryanair, keep in mind
- to book early to get a good price, - to book online and register your baggage - if you register it at the gate, it's more expensive - and - to be in Hahn at least one hour prior to departure, earlier would be better. Check-in will be closed in time, even if there are still people waiting.
