Ithaca considering a move
Posted: Mon April 17, 2006 07:01 PM UTC
Hi,

I'm considering taking a job in the Corning, NY area. I'd like to get a variety of opinions about the region from the people who live there. I lived in Horseheads until I was about 10 but that was long ago.

What can you tell me about the best towns to live in? Where would you choose to live if you worked at Corning? Is Ithaca a bad drive from Corning?

Just how bad are those winters?

And, anything else you think I should know while I'm making my decision?

Thanks a million.

Not that it is relevant to any of your questions, Ithaca is one of the places I have lived that I kick myself in the ass for ever leaving. Maybe it is the rose colored glasses that come with hindsight but man did I enjoy living in Ithaca. The winters were brutal but everything else about the place made it worth it.

I lived there in 73 and 74. It was a great place to be young in.

I adore Ithaca, and if it were feasible I'd move there TODAY! Well, maybe tomorrow. There are some very small and friendly towns around the Ithacan outskirts. I suggest taking a look around the pages of members who live there or who have visited several times. If you're wondering about a commute, Ithaca to Corning could be tough in the winter.

I don't remember the winters being so brutal, but maybe that's because I came from Massachusetts. Lots of snow, lots of salt on the roads, lots of joy at the arrival of spring...same as most places, no? Although, coming from more mild weather, it could be a shock!

I was just perusing the NYS forum today and see this....

You are thinking os about a 40+ mile drive. One way. Rte 13 on a bad winters day is tough. And Rte 17 with the snow and wind howling over it on the stretch from Horseheads to Corning... Have you thought of Watkins Glen. It's on the south end of Sececa Lake. Half the distance to Corning. Ithaca is only 25 miles to the east of that. Then again, how many bad days driving? Only a few really when it gets down to it. Gas prices in this part of NYS are high. 3.00+ per gallon.
