There is no super train between Singapore, Malaysia and Bangkok. Train frequency has dropped drastically in Malaysia since North South Highway completed and because of single track, take twice longer than road.

Either fly Air Asia or take the fast, aircon buses that ply the highways of Malaysia. Of course, if you are a railway enthusiast and have plenty of time, you can take the train from Singapore to KL, then continue to Penang. There is no train to Melaka.

Consider taking bus from Singapore to Melaka, then KL or Singapore direct to KL and from KL to Penang. Quite scenic during daytime. If you want to save hotel, you can also take the overnight bus from Singapore direct to Penang.

From Penang (Butterworth), I would recommend the international train (daily, overnight) to Bangkok. Safe, comfortable, cheap and fun. Choose the lower bunk (around USD25).

I do not recommend taking the train all the way to Bangkok. If you like train travel, you can take the train up to Kuala Lumpur. You will pass by some nice countryside and villages. From KL, I recommend that you fly Air Asia to Bangkok to avoid the land journey over southern Thailand where the activities of Muslim insurgents make the journey unsafe.

hi ann...

it has to be the orient express... it does not have a daily departure but only once or twice a month... unless you are train freak or really loaded with cash and don't know how to spend it, then it is a good experience... but unfortunately it is way too expensive for this train freak (sad to say)... for the cheapest one way bkk-spore fare of about usd1,800, you can fly first class and stay in a 5-star hotel and still have some changes for pocket money...

regards.chia

My mum did the train travel twice but from the north of the Peninsula Malaysia to Bangkok and it takes a long time. 1 day and night, I think.

From Singapore to the North, just take the comfortable coaches. And stop along the way. Malacca, Kuala Lumpur, Penang.
