Hi all please help. I'm in Hawaii on honeymoon and was wondering what the best way to travel around the islands is? I don't want to book into a resort and be stuck in one place for the week.
If you're only there for a week, I wouldn't advise you to get too ambitious about island-hopping. Any one of the Hawaiian islands has enough to see and do to keep you busy for a full week. Just rent a car and drive around. If you are dying to see more than one island, I'd keep it to a maximum of two. Unless you are flying between Honolulu and somewhere else, inter-island flights can eat up a lot of your day--to get between islands, in many cases you have to connect through Honolulu.
The best guidebooks are the "Revealed" series (Maui Revealed, Kauai Revealed, etc: http://www.wizardpub.com/main/home.html). I highly recommend that you get the one for the island you'll be on--then you will realize just how much there is to do there.
Rental cars are fairly cheap if you stay away from the Jeep or convertibles. Inter-island flights are also fairly cheap and if you check the schedules you can find one leaving just about every hour from most islands. Some may connect via another island, but you can usually find a direct flight at least a couple of times per day to most other islands. Check Hawaiian Airlines, Island Air, and Aloha Airlines.
If you are thinking of traveling between the islands the the only option is by air. The most scenic option is Pacific Wings who files between most islands in fairly small planes giving you a close look at the landscapes you're flying over, and you may even spot whales in the ocean.
For getting arround on an island, rent a car. On the Big Island I'll recomend staying at hotels arround the island so that you don't have to spend lots of time driving back to the same hotel. As travelmad478 said get a copy of Wizards publishings The Ultimate guidebook for the island you'll be on and you'll have plenty of tips on what to se and do.
I just read a news article that said there is a new inter-island airlines Go Airlines that is giving all the other fits as they are flying for $39 between islands. The others are trying to match the fare.
