If you are talking about a human guide .... no. With a rental car and a stop at the visitor center, and of course a good supply of water, you'll be fine :)

I don't see why a guide would be necessary. The road's a little bumpy, but it's well-travelled and well-signed.
Nearby Canyon de Chelley requires them if that's what you mean.
