Cheap sleep in NYC

Can people recommend me a cheap sleep in New York City, Manhattan, running the marathon there in November and i fancy staying on for an extra few nights once i've done the run but would like this to be as inexpensive as poss. Don't mind shared facilities or dorms even, just clean, safe and good location.

Cheers guys.

For funky, cheap, fun accommodations, try the Carlton Arms... http://www.carltonarms.com/

Congratulations on getting to run in the greatest marathon of them all! You're wise to think this far ahead, as it's nearly impossible to find a room then at any price. I'd recommend the YMCA. Not only a great bargain, but the Westside Y and the Vanderbilt Y are centrally located. If they're not available, I'd try a youth hostel. If you go to tripadvisor.com's NYC hotel page, you'll find tabs at the top for Hotels,B&Bs and "Other." Select the Other for info on hostels.

If none of the above works, two options off the top of my head would be, first, to check with the NY Road Runner's Club to see if they post info on accommodations, and second, to try craigslist.org. There are thousands of runners looking for cheap accommodations.

Lots of luck. Hope you wear your tartain in the race. I'll be out on Frist Avenue rooting you on!
