For pleasant surroundings and good coffee, best will be at Starbucks at Sun Plaza (kampung keling) area. There are couple of others in Sun Plaza area but forgot the names. Otherwise, most people opt to go to warung kopi (small stalls selling coffee).

hmmm .. I dunno exactly nice coffee shop, but I remember my trip to Medan years ago. Medan itself have a VERY nice local coffee (I just drink everywhere & hotel cafe), that I rarely find in Jakarta. so try to taste local coffee than find to drink a coffee of franchise like starbucks.

Hi Vic, I am a sumatran guy living in Bali island.huh you reminds me of those coffee from sumatra, not to compare to bali ( has no good quality, at least for my taste ). try the coffee in holands bakery( kampung keling ) indian town. or the fountain cafe in deli plaza, or sit down and watch the traffic going in tip top restaurant, or walk from there to Dharma deli hotel, or polonia hotel. If I were there I will invite you for alot of coffee in those places.
Have a good zip of sumtra coffee. cheers tom

Though it's too late to answer your question, 'cause I've just sign in as a member. I'm Medanese living at Jakarta. Vic, You can try Bel Mondo Cafe&Noodle House, opposite the Sun Plaza. This cafe located the same street as Sun Plaza and this cafe also well known for Medan youngsters for hangout at Saturdays. Many expatriats go there too. You can visit their website:www.belmondocafe.com, or you can visit The Traders, a place for most executive's hangout choice at Jl. Pattimura No. 423. Don't know their website. But along Jl. Pattimura you can find many cafe too, such as la Salvador (not sure if they still open :P) You can click to wikitravel.org/en/Medan as well to enrich your info about Medan. Or click to www.kotamedan.com
