Arriving in La Spezia of a cruise ship in june so will just have a few hours to spare Should my wife and i spend it in la spezia or take a train to genoa for the day or visit the towns in cinque terre useing the train. Any help much appreciated.

I don't know how many hours you have, but you can easily take the train up to one of the Cinque Terre or take the city bus out to Portovenere (like the Cinque Terre, but at the mouth of the bay that La Spezia is on). In either case, you'll have the chance to walk around and have a meal in a more picturesque setting than much of La Spezia.
I haven't checked on how long the ride is to Genova (Genoa), but it will be a longer trip, and there's probably more to see than you can do in a day...I would think that the day trip to one of the Cinque Terre or Portovenere would suit your schedule as well as give you positive memories of "old Italy"... to genova from spezia is about 1 hour of train.
if you want to stay in spezia visit the musem LIA...full of paintings..
