we are staying along franklin ave just off hollywood blvd. heard rumours about prostitution, muggings because next to downtown l.a. so, is it safe??

i've wandered around there day and night and felt safe, however as with any city its part how streetwise you are, part how well you know the area (ie the bad parts) and part pot luck who you bump into.

we recently had an unpleasant experience in New York just off Times Square at 7.45am ON A SUNDAY MORNING !!! probably the last time / place you would expect any trouble in the whole of Manhattan

That's not next to downtown L.A. where are you staying, The Best Western?

hmm, depend on how late you're staying out I guess. But you can use this http://www.lapdonline.org/crimemap/ to check out the last few days of reported crimes in the area.

Franklin and Hollywood are parallel for miles, and IIRC they do not intersect.

If I had to choose a part of Franklin, I'd be most comfortable at the western end near Highland. In the middle near 101 it seems a bit down. I don't know the eastern end, but it is not really close to downtown - at least not close enough to share its character.
If you give us a more precise location, we can probably give better advice.

The LAPD site unfortunately only lists *reported* crimes, and reporting is uneven. There are some neighborhoods in LA where the locals will not report a murder because they don't want cops around to interfere with their next crack purchase, and other neighborhoods where some poor bastard who is lost gets reported as a prowler and is surrounded by cops.
