THings I should not miss
Posted: Wed June 4, 2003 09:19 PM UTC
Me and my best friend are gonna be traveling spain for the month of august, we would appreciate any tips and advice on things not to miss. We are two ladies in our early twenties that like culture and history but we also love to party. Looking forward to some advice. Plus we are also considering spending some time in morroco, any input on that would be great.

A whole month in Spain. You will have lots of time to see much of Spain. Barcelona, Seville and Madrid are the most obvious places to go to but you can cover these in two weeks time to spare. If you are there for a whole month then think about going to the off the beaten track places like Salamanca, Caceres and Merida. They are rich in history and there are not too many other tourists. Back on the tourist trail you definitely visit Granada for the Alhambra and Cordoba for its Great Mosque. And whatever you do, do not miss the Prado Museum in Madrid. It is one of the world's great art museums. Have a good trip.

I recommend you going to Sevilla!!!!! There are some bars next to the river there... is a good place to be..and if you want culture you can also go to Gibraltar, where you will find the mixture of spain and arabic culture

Check out Cadiz or Sevilla...It has a lot of history and culture plus it's close to Morocco. The month of August is also a time for Feria. Every town celebrates a weeklong festival and it's a big part of their culture down south (Andalucia). It's also time to party and show off their dancing skills (Sevillana), try to learn this graceful dance, it makes a woman very attractive when they dance it. Good book to take with you is Lets Go Spain, it has a lot of useful info.

I would head for Benidorm. It's one of the best places in Spain for nightlife & the surrounding area is terrific. Hire a car, get out in the mountains & explore the lovely towns & villages that make up the costa blanca, Guadalest being one of the best.
Have fun,
Darren..

I agree with most of it, specially with Granada, Merida and Salamanca ....

but only remeber that august is hot, and some areas of Spain as Sevilla and Cordoba are called the fryingpan of Andalusia (La sarten de andalucia) as sometimes you can get easily into 45C of temperature....

The coastal places are always busy during august, so travelling inside cna be a good idea

do not worry about history and culture in Spain, in most of the little places you can imagine you will find it.

for going out, the best palces are the coastal ones...

In Granada apart of the Alhambra go to try the tapas, they are free with a drink, great stuff, and also during july and august you can visit the alhambra at night, even for someone that goes often there... the first time i saw at night .... was incredible! I hardly recomend it...

Enjoy it!

I may be wrong, but I guess Madrid will probably be your point of entry from Canada into Spain, so you could start exploring the city and neighbouring historic towns such as Toledo, Cuenca, Segovia, Ávila or Salamanca, all of them easy daytrips by train from the capital. That should keep you busy for at least one whole week.
Since you have included Morocco in your plans, then your most obvious option is heading south, where you should not miss Seville, Córdoba, Granada and Ronda. That should keep you busy for at least another week.
Then you could venture into Morocco for, say, another week, and finally make your way back into Spain and head north for Barcelona all the way along the Mediterranean coast visiting at least Alicante and Valencia.
Whatever you decide, enjoy.

Just realise that if you travel in august, the Malaga festival is between the 15th and the 24th
