It's a different maelstrom, but I have pictures of Saltstraumen in a travelogue on my Bodø page.

Yooperprof is correct. The Maelstrom outside the tip of Lofoten isn't as strong as the Saltstraumen.
Saltstraumen goes through a straith, very strong. Hated beeing in a boat there when it was on it strongest.

Thanks again

Now there are a bridge over Saltstraumen, very high, and steep to climb. Very good view point. I took the fishingtrip years before that bridge.

PST - do try to eat sei (thats the norwegian name of the fish, it is a bit greyish in flesh, NON fat, looks abit similar as cod in shape).
The best is to eat it cold (!!!) with rømme (sour cream), cucumber salad and varm boiled potatoes. (now I'm looking forward to go up there this summer too).

AND if you see 'gammel sei' or sometimes named as 'rød sei' (rød = red) do try that too. It is salted sei, should be salted for 3 years :) It is more stiff in flesh, nice and salty (ala klippfish/backalao fish).
