| Berchtesgaden | Salzburg to Berchtesgaden Posted: Fri April 7, 2006 07:15 AM UTC
Like to make a day trip. Appreciate some info on tpt to Berchtesgaden?
Which route is advisable? Bus / Train? Via bus (To & fro) - Timing, cost, station, time taken? Via Train Think its 1hr, and cost ??? Is the train station at Berchtesgaden "Berchtesgaden hbf"? From the train station, how convenient/fast to walk to the attractions? Thanks |

The train from Salzburg departs from 3 locations: 1) hbf 2) Salzburg Ferdinand Hanusch Platz 3) Salzburg Rathaus I know #1 is the main train station, but where's #2 & #3?

Single ticket is EUR 4,20. Day ticket is EUR 8,40.
Covers both routes, i.e. the direct buses and the trains via Freilassing. Direct buses are with 42 min travel time faster than the train http://www.rvo-bus.de/pdffiles/9540.pdf - salt mine: is on the route of this bus line - times for the next bus to the Obersalzberg or lake Königssee can be found at the botttom of the timetable bus network Berchtesgaden http://www.rvo-bus.de/pdffiles/bgd_buslinienplan.pdf Berchtesgaden Hbf = Hauptbahnhof = main railway station (historical reasons, today it's the only one) Berchtesgaden Busbahnhof = bus station, which is next to the Hauptbahnhof

Berchtesgaden and Salzburg are both inside the SVV, the local public transport network of the Salzburg region.
If you buy a SVV ticket, this is a zone to zone ticket. I.e. the single ticket for EUR 4,20 is valid from any bus/train stop in Salzburg to any bus/train stop in Berchtesgaden. And with the day ticket you can travel inside the covered zones as often as you like. bus network Salzburg http://www.scoolcard.at/fileadmin/docs/Salzburg_LNP_2_06.pdf Bus line 840 runs Hauptbahnhof - Mirabellplatz - Rathaus - Justizgebäude - Josefiau - Alpensiedlung

Thank you for the helpful info.
With the day ticket, can I hop on & off the bus? Or do I have to pay each time I board the bus? can I purchase ticket onboard from the driver? Is it advisable to walk between attractions? (or too far to walk?) Where is "Salzburg Ferdinand Hanusch Platz" & "Salzburg Rathaus"? Oh, have you visited the Berchtesgaden salt mine? How does it compare to the one in Krakow and Hallstatt?

Let me see if I got this right - With the day ticket 8.40 EUR, I can take bus 9540/train from Salzburg to B'gaden & back + travel on the internal local within B'gaden area?
Can I purchase the 8.40 EUR ticket from "Mirabellplatz" or only at the main train station (hbf)? How should I ask for the ticket (Unfortunately i only speak English). Do I buy it off the ticketing machine, or at the counter? Gosh, 8.40 EUR vs 35 EUR charged by tour companies to B'gaden! that's a huge saving!

> With the day ticket, can I hop on & off the bus?
Yes. > Or do I have to pay each time I board the bus? No. > can I purchase ticket onboard from the driver? If you start at a stop with ticket machines you should buy it from a ticket machine. Otherwise you can buy it from the driver, but they prefer is you pay fairly exactly: 8,40 8,50 9,00 or an EUR 10,00 note. > Is it advisable to walk between attractions? (or too far to walk?) To some, e.g. lake Königssee, it is too far to walk. In Berchtesgaden you can walk if you like. You can decided this when there. > Where is "Salzburg Ferdinand Hanusch Platz" & "Salzburg Rathaus"? You can locate these places on the bus network map of Salzburg I linked to in a previous answer. > Oh, have you visited the Berchtesgaden salt mine? How does it compare to the one in Krakow and Hallstatt? I've visited so far none of them (but I've been in other salt mines).
