Is Magnetic Island suitable mainly for backpackers or would a couple (55+yrs) find it relaxing?

Both because there is hiking and there are also resort-like hotels on the island. Lots of little secluded beaches to explore that can be romantic if you are willing to walk a few of kilometers to them.

I agree, it's a good size island with plenty to see and do. If I remember correctly, about 2,000 people live on Magnetic Island. A lot of them commute each day to work in Townsville.

Many thanks to all of you for your very helpful suggestions. We were in Australia last July/August visiting Perth and Margaret River, Uluru, Melbourne and Great Ocean Road, Sydney and Blue Mountains. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience! Would love to visit Kakadu and Adelaide/Kangaroo Island too sometime, but are thinking of just a lazy holiday in Queensland and few days in Sydney this year.

You're not making the mistake many people make, trying to see too much in too short a time. It's far too big a country to try to see it in one trip. As you've obviously found, it's so different from area to area that you can come many times and have a different type of holiday each time. Enjoy your trip :-)
