I suggest a trip to the library.
I received a very substantial interest free loan to study abroad from a Dutch foundation I found listed in a comprehensive grants encyclopedia. A reference librarian will know exactly how to direct you.

Tell the school that you want to apply as an international student. A good school will do the financial aid package and visa (I think that it's an F-1 visa) application paperwork for you. I think that you legally can only work 20 hours a week. Go to www.state.gov, which is the website for the U.S. Department of State.

Social Security - it's highly unlikely and extremely difficult nowadays for non-Americans to obtain a SSN in the States.
