| Khartoum | Could I bring my pet cat with me to Khartoum? Posted: Tue April 4, 2006 05:53 PM UTC
I need some advice if i may ask of the feasibility in bringing my cat along with me when i go to Khartoum for an assignment. I currently live in New York and might leave in the next month or so. Would anyone know of the logistics? bringing to khartoum and returning back to new york? i might get assigned for a minimun of 1 year. Hoping for your kind advice.
thank you... |

Hi,
I had a similar query about taking a dog to Khartoum a few weeks ago. Most Sudanese don't really understand the concept of pets...animals are to be eaten, worked or kicked. Cats fall into the last category unfortunately, although there are a few cat lovers in Sudan. Is your cat an outdoor cat or an indoor one? If it is an outdoor one, it'll be at risk from local cats, mostly strays, who probably carry all sorts of nasty diseases. Cats like to mark their territory, so a newcomer like yours will have a rough time of it to begin with. Cat food is non-existant, even in the supermarkets geared up for foreigners. My cat is a fussy eater, only likes certain brands of cat food, so he would not survive Sudan. There are vets in Sudan, many in fact, but they are used to dealing with camels, cows and sheep. I doubt if any Sudanese vet knows or cares much about cats. Then there's the heat. If you choose to take your cat, make sure your accommodation has both air-con and a generator. Power cuts are frequent, and not at all fun for humans when there is no electricity and the temperature is around 5o degrees. Make sure your cat gets all its vaccinations before you leave...maybe talk to your local vet to see what they recommend. If it was my cat, I would leave him at home in the care of a good friend. Cats don't usually like change much, and I think a new location like Sudan would maybe be too much. hope this helps, and if you have any other questions about Sudan, let me know :@P Regards, Maykal

I agree with Maykal. Most cats here are more like wild animals than pets. But if you still want to bring your cat over, I believe there is one or two supermarkets that sell catfood (maybe Amarat Center, I'll have to confirm). I like cats too

Hi- i may be moving to Khartoum soon as well to work for the UN...and i know NOTHING about the country. Would you have any information on the housing situation, price ranges, things to do, general perception of expats living there?
best, Diana
