| Iquitos | Iquitos Peru to Manaus Brasil Posted: Mon June 2, 2003 11:11 PM UTC
Going back to S.A. for the fourth time this winter (I am from Canada) I wonder if it is posible to go by boat from Iquitos to Manaus. If so, has anyone taken this trip? If yes, what is the duration, cost, the scenery etc. I would be forever grate full for all any answer.

I've never done the trip, but I heard its possible when I was in Manaus from my guide. Takes a long time (11+ days by amazon boat). I have a danger tip on those boats on my Manaus page. Costs shoulden't be too bad, but safty is a bigger issue.

if you travel from iquitos to manaus you are going downstream and the trip will be shorter than if you go upriver.
i went from belem to manaus 2 years ago and that took 5 days upstream. the trip wont cost you more than a hundred dollars. i don't think that safety is a big problem.

I have taken a boat 1 day upstream and met some of the nicest people in the villages on the way. Very refreshing location.

Well the actual time of travel depends on what kind of vessel you opt to use, the type of experience the people who will handle it have, and last but by all means not least the weather, if it rains too much it's bound to be a quick trip, but very rattling, some people do it on excursion's boats, very expensive treat! it will set you back some 600 that way, but they are very comfortable and will take care of accomodations in Manaus, mainly consisting of " Hamacas" LOL, it takes some 8 days that way, if you decide to go Solo, then it'll take about 6 days, because you'll want to stop at nights for rest and safety, and set you back some 150 US$, but it's by far the best way to do it!, just make sure you get your shots before you take that Adventure, it's common for people to get ill with fever and God knows what else!
Be aware that there have been some problems recently in Peru, and it reflects on Iquitos as well, like in any part of the world take good care and don't flash too much cash around! Take lots of film with you and wait till about the second day to start the shutter, believe me you'll see all kinds of things there! Take your shots about a week before the trip! Be safe! Arturo
