| Klaipeda | How to get there? Posted: Mon March 27, 2006 10:30 AM UTC
Hi,
My wife and I are thinking of spending a few days in klaipeda in July. We can get flights to Kaunas from the UK. how can we get to klaipeda from the airport? Preferably the cheapest way. Any ideas of some decent , not highly priced, accomodation as well please. What sort of tourists do go to Klaipeda? When is the 'seas festival'? regards, Pete |

Klaipeda itself is not terribly interesting but you could make it a base for exploring. I have been several times to Lithuania and I always travel by bus which is the cheapest way. Depending on how long you plan to stay, you could instead of Klaipeda stay a couple of nights in Nida on the Curionian spit (the tourist office will help to find a B&B place) and a couple of nights in Palanga.

Oh, I forgot. If you want to prebook B&B try www.litinterp.lt. I used their various B&B services in Kaunas and Vilnius and rented a car from them too.

Maybe I could stay in Kaunas and travel to other places for a day from there. Would that be possible to do. A day trip to Klaipeda?
Are there many 'beer houses' or beer kellars in Lithuania. I fancy going to places like that for the atmosphere and food/beer etc. One more question. Difficult to answer abouit weather-- but generally what sort of weather could we expect in July? regards, pete

Summer seems to be tricky weatherwise. I must say I have been in June and August. Last August it rained almost all the time and was quite horrible. Maybe you could email remigia. She lives in Kaunas and knows more.
In Kaunas I stayed in Hotel Metropol (right in the center and cheap) several times. I think I have a tip about it. There are a lot of buses from Kaunas like hourly to Vilnius and it takes an hour to Vilnius but if I remember right it takes about 3-4 hours to Klaipeda. There are not really beer cellars but nice restaurants to sit outside. Kaunas is a historical place but not that terribly big.

Pete,
It just so happens that my wife and I are also going there in July. Sea Festival - a three day celebration will begin on Friday July 21 ( I am told ) This year there are other things going on as well during that time. We have decided to go there before this. Sonja has made good suggestion - get away from Klaipeda to Nida for a a couple day or even a day. Hotel Klaipeda was recomended to us by a VT member <hotel@klaipedahotel.lt>. From Kaunas there used to be a boat trip to NIDA, I am sure if it still operates. Ther are lots of info about Klaipeda. Try www.inyourpocket.com or just google "klaipeda" zeeman

Pete,
Last year in July we had excellent weather. Most of the time it was sunny with temperatures up to 30 degrees C. Though there was an occasional thunderstorm. Niekie

The boat service from Kaunas was stopped several years ago and has so far not been reintroduced :(

One day is really enough for Klaipeda, but if you stay in Kaunas (where to my opinion one day is also enough) I would suggest to go to Vilnius rather than to Klaipeda. It takes much less time and the city is nicer, more things to see. If you still want to go to Klaipeda, I agree with the others and should say that Curonian Split - Nida, etc. is worth to visit because of great views, wild nature, nice beaches and sand dunes. If you go during sea festival, Klaipeda and the ferries to Curonian s. may be crowded. The ferry takes only about 10min. The weather in July may be very different. Sometimes it is plus 30 and sunshine, sometimes it is raining and you may need a jacket (it depends on your luck). Check the weather before leaving to Lithuania. Of course there are lot of beer pubs or places where atmosphere is alike. In Klaipeda there is a pub called Memelis, I think you will like it! In Vilnius there are several places of that kind - pub Prie Universiteto, etc. Have a nice trip!

Please, check my tips about Klaipeda. I live here 19 years, so I can answer some questions very detailed if you ask.
It takes 2 hours from Kaunas to Klaipeda by buss. Best way is to get by taxi to buss station and then to use so called microbuss. It is the same price like buss, but faster. In Klaipeda you MUST spend one evening in Kurpiai pub with exeptional atmosphere and live music every evening, posibility to dance, or just have a conversation with locals. You can also visit dolphins show, or just spend time on the beach, what is reachable in 20 minutes from old city. Of course you should visit Neringa and noisy Palanga. If you want to come on Sea Festival time, you should make hotel booking already now. It is problem to get acomodation close to the festival. Half liter of beer in restaurant costs less than two euro. You can eat well for five euro. Vilnius is nice city, but in summer it is a bit dusty and hot comparing with beach area. Be free to ask details.
