Ok...there is a place called Brockhole - A National Park Visitors center, that is situated between Windermere and Ambleside - your children may enjoy that. It is a place where Beatrix Potter used to go - Brockhole has a famous adventure playground, lakeside setting, interactive exhibitions, fabulous gardens and games lawn, great gift shop and famile café, but there are plenty of places to go and have a picnic. I think that entry is free too!! PLus you can get on a boat and cruise on the lake! (not sure how much that costs though!

I am not sure how much driving you are going to be doing, but keswick is also nice, you could visit the Pencil Museum there and find out how pencils are made (there is also a GEORGEOUS sweet shop in keswick too!!!) there is a swimming pool at Kewick too with slides and a wave machine.

Check this link out for a walk that is near ambleside too! http://www.walkingbritain.co.uk/walks/walksa/wa026.shtml

Please contact me if you have any other questions - i will try and answer them!

There is a very good minature steam railway at Ravenglass and the lttle trains wind their way up Eskdale.Their website is very good - Google "Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway".
Their is also a combined steam train and lake trip on the Lakeside and Haverhwaite Railway. At Lakeside there is a very good aquarium centre where you csn see life under the lakes.

Also there is the Grizedale Forest Park. Get to the Park HQ and you can hire bikes( with trailers for the small children) and follow the sculpture trail. It's a great day out.

The South Lakeland Wildlife Park near Ulverston is also good with tigers, lions, cheetahs, baboons.

Some of the lakes - Windermere, Ullswater, Coniston - have boat trips.

A great place to eat for families is Lucy's On a Plate in Ambleside, but book ahead. They also have a tapas type place in the same town called Lucy 4.
