| Arequipa | Best thing-to-do in Arequipa (?) Posted: Mon March 27, 2006 03:31 AM UTC
Well, I believe the most famous Thing-to-do in Arequipa is the Colca Canion. BUT, ive read a plenty of posts talking how disspointing it was. Just read a couple of backpakers saiyng it was great. Im going there right now in april...
So, I ask you. Is that the best option for someone who ill saty there for 2d/1night? Thanks in advance. |

Actually Colca Canyon is not in Arequipa. It is about 8 hours away if my memory serves me correctly. It might be the best thing to do from Arequipa. I really found the overnight "tour" fun and inexpensive. Colonial Tours was recommended to me by a traveller and did not disappoint. There are other adventure trips like climbing mountains. I am not sure what the best thing to do in Arequipa is. I enjoyed the city sites, food and climate. bob

I heard from many travellers that a Colca Canyon Tour is a little dissappoiting. I did it independently and had a great time. To do this, this is what you can do: Get a bus to Chivay and once there get a map of the canyon from the police station. Crash in a hostel and get up ridiculously early. Get a local bus to Cruz del Condor and see the condors before all the Tour Buses get there. Once you've had enough of condors catch a bus further down to Pampa San Miguel. From there walk down to the bottom of the canyon using the map you've got from the police. At the bottom you'll cross the river and walk through San Juan de Chuccho. From there you can either head to Tapay (if you want 3 days in the canyon) or Cosnirhua and Malata if you want a two day trek. You can stay in someone's house in any of these villages, but if you carry on past Malata you get to El Oasis which is warm springs with very basic accomodation (5 soles) and food (another 5 soles). From there you stay overnight and it's a 4 hour walk back up to the top where you come out at Cabanaconde. From there you can get a bus to Chivay and then back to Arequipa. It might take longer and be more effort than tour bus, but you can really appreciate the depth and beauty of the canyon in a way you can't on a whistle stop tour in a bus.
