Anyone had experience taking night trains from Venice?
Posted: Wed March 22, 2006 02:42 PM UTC
Ma Kettle and I expect to have about 30 kilo's of luggage each to return to Canada with, after shipping as much as we can through the mail.

If we took the night train to Paris (then on to London), using the bedroom for two, where does our luggage go? Will it fit in the compartment with us?

Secondly, pictures I've seen of these compartments don't excite me too much. Any experience with cleanliness etc. We always travel 2nd class, being simple folk as we are, but sitting my posterior on a seat is one thing, laying my head on it is another.

Ideas??

We haven't packed yet Matz, but we're going home to Canada by air, so it will be luggage, 2 pcs each. When you say there is room in the corridor, do you mean outside the sleeping compartment? Also, there doesn't appear to be any space alloted under or behind the seats inside the compartment. Is there some sort of closet area not visible in the photos?

Ok great. Thanks Matz. I've been trying the sites you gave in the other thread, and something keeps freezing up. I'll continue playing with it.

My wife and I did in November just what you're planning to do. We took the night train out of Venice to Paris and then on the Eurostar to London. Yes the compartment is the smallest room I've ever been in for two people. We had three large cases, a suit bag, and a big hand bag. There are shelves on each side of the cabin at the roof that we were actually able to squeeze all this luggage in. Very, very, tight. This was in first class. The cabin was very clean and not an issue at all. The fellow who watches after the passengers in our train car was very nice and took very good care of us. Dean

Pa-- If 30 kg of luggage means two suitcases at about 15 each, you have no problem at all putting them in the overhead racks. We have done that several times in all kinds of trains.

We also have taken many night trains to Munich, Paris, and Amsterdam, they are fine, Pa. We have slept in sleeping compartments and also slept in supposed to be sitting compartments, and we are still okay health-wise! :) The sleeping compartment comes with sheets and even small pillows, but you can also put your own pillow cases over them if you feel uneasy about it.

Don't forget to wait until 14 days before the departure date to buy the tickets so you can take advantage of the Smart Price promotion.
