Anchorage Northern Lights?
Posted: Fri March 17, 2006 08:48 AM UTC
I live on Elmendorf, and am really intrested in seeing the Aurora. I was told that if the magnetic field is high, and the moon is dull, then it is visible if the aurora is active. But I've been told that it is all about location. Does anyone have any great spots in Anchorage or Eagle River area, or up on base or post? Just wondering

Anywhere away from steet lights is good - Earthquake Park being good because of the great view to the north as wll. Check the aurora forecast at http://www.gi.alaska.edu/cgi-bin/predict.cgi to see if is worth going out. The forecasts are made about 3 days ahead, as thats how long it takes the sun's magnetic storms to reach the earth and cause the aurora.

Arctic Valley can be phenomenal as can Birch Lake area. We usually just drive up to Glen Alps if it is really ripping. Obviously Hatchers Pass is a ways to drive but if there is a good forcast you can see it really well up there. I never seem to be able to see a forcast and pursue it though. My best luck has been when I just happen to look up while taking the trash out?

Good hunting.

I see you made it!

Since you're already on base, you probably have access to the rec area north of the runways. The lodge on the lake is a great spot because it gets so dark there. So just use the web site given previously to find a good night - pack up your hot cocoa and you're set!
