Can anyone help me who has lived in Port Harcourt for a period of time lately as to how safe it is to have a young Australian family live there? Any info you might have would be great. Cheers

Port Harcourt RE: Do we move or not

Port Harcourt is quite safe as i have been leaving in this city for a long time and know all about it. there are alot of foriegn nationals here working as expatriate in the Nigerian Oil & Gas industries and they find it quite condusive, most foriegn nationals here live in reserved areas. Since Port Harcourt is located in the Hart of Rivers State which has alot of rivers and oceans, most things you might have heared about the Niger Delta happens in the Creeks, so the city of Port Harcourt is safe enough for a young Australian Family.

Depends on the Camp and the schools. If you are moving there it must be with an oil or service company. Most of the expats we know in Port Harcourt are British or from Holland. Schools are not what you would find in other expat assignments but the camp I have visited had plenty of happy young children. Denge and Malaria are a real problem. We choose not to accept an assignment in Latin America due to these concerns. Then however, the only real med was Larium which had very, very bad side effects. Now there is Malerone which I take without ill effect and I know others who do as well. The long term effects of this med are unfortunatly not know for small children.

Over all, I would choose Port Harcourt over Lagoes for a family, but I prefer Houston for mine.

Cheers Frank
