Fussen In and around Fussen

I am going back to Southern Germany after nearly twenty years away. I can't remember all the things to see there. I want to show my wife the side of Germany I once saw. Can anyone think of the odd or off the beatin path places around Fussen. I'll be spending 16 days in the south so I have alot of time to explore.
Thanks for you help.

Hi there,

First of all, the Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castle are not really of the ebaten track, but maybe good to mention anyway. There are several other castles around, for example in Hohenpeissenberg (should be a nice place) and Ehrenstein in Reutte/Austria, which also hosts the European Castles Museum.
The Allgau area (west of Fussen) is also beautiful to roam - try to go for a hike (or cycle) for a day or 2!
VT-member Gubbi1 lives in the area, he should have some pages from the area.
Definitely visit lake Konstanz (Bodensee) for a visit, boat and/or cycle trip! Then go to Austria and beyond, I can recommend the Upper Inn Valley which you can reach via Reutte-Imst-Landeck and then direction Reschenpass or Schweiz (Switzerland). On the road to Imst you can make a nice detour into the Lechtal and over the Hahntennjoch Pass to Imst. I think VT-member Lotharlerch has some more about that trip and the region.
From the Oberinntal you can head into Switzerland (towards St Moritz) and/or Italy (Merano). We have a few pages on the Austrian (Fendels) and Swiss part.

Have a great trip!

P.

Füssen is about the most touristy place in Germany with the exception of maybe Heidelburg so I would avoid that place like the plauge!

However, you can go around the rest of nearby Allgaeu for the mountain scenery, farms, monistaries, etc. Allgaeu is also a big tourist area, but for Germans, in contrast to the places above which I dont think have a single german ever in them! Depending on how your german is, you might even be able to find a nice Ferienwohnung in a small village for a decent price.
