Pompeii What to do in Pompei after 5PM before I catch the train back to Rome at 9PM?
Posted: Thu March 9, 2006 03:33 PM UTC
I'm planning to spend a day in Pompei (Dep from Rome@6:45AM & Arr in Pompei@ 9:30AM). The plan is to spend time at the ruins, until closing time (which is 5PM in mid March). Since I'm opting to catch the Eurostar train back to Rome at 8:57PM, I was wondering what it is that I might be able to do between the time I leave the ruins to the time I board the train. Any suggestion/s is/are really welcome.
Should I try to see the museum in Naples that is so much talked about on this forum, or should I wander in Pomei downtown? Or should I just consider catching an earlier train (in which case I won't be able to use the return Eurostar, since the earliest Eurostar from Pompeii is at 8:57PM). FYI. Since I'll be travelling with a toddler, please suggest accordingly. Thank you all very much :)

Pompeji is also a nice place for the city, BUT in your case I would at least try to see a bit of Napoli. (the museum will be closed most probably also after 05.00p.m.)
You could also try to get closer to the Vesuvius by train.

The archaeological museum in Naples closes at 8PM, but you must enter before 7PM. It is a wonderful museum but I'm not sure that I would enjoy it after a whole day at Pompei. "Downtown" Pompei has nothing of interest or beauty. What about stopping by Ercolano (Herculanaeum) on your way back to Naples?

Hi there
Pompeii is not only the ruins, the city is famous with locals to be the one of hearths of Cattolic religion. I would suggest you to spend some time in the Basilic of Holy Mary and admire the wonderful marbles. Of course, it is forbinned to enter the Basilic with shorts and you will need to have something to cover your shoulders aswell, but it's such a mystic place that you will not be regretting of the time there
