| Longyearbyen | Misellaneous questions on Longyearbyen. Posted: Tue March 7, 2006 07:53 AM UTC
Hi,
I plan to stay at Longyearbyen for a couple of months. I have a couple of questions and would appreciate any replies. 1) Mobile phone: Where and what sort of a prepaid SIM card should I get for my tri-band mobile phone that would work in Longyearbyen? I will be in Oslo first and would be able to get one there. 2) I know that there is a bank in Longyearbyen. Is there an ATM that accepts Cirrus/Maestro cards (i.e. I could withdraw money from my home bank)? Thank you. |

General info on Svalbrd at www.visitnorway.com, Svalbard is the first choice in the left menu. Norwegian telcom Telenor has a communications net there. Cirrus and Maestro are unknown in Norway, to my knowledge. Have not seen these marked on any ATMs (called minibank here). Suppose you shall have to conact the staff at the bank.

Hi,
the key provider is Telenor and with a sim card valid for them you can easily use your mobile in Longyearbyen. But only in the town, though, outside town there is no mobile network. A Cirrus system card should work; and do you mean mater card? In that case no problem. There is a postal bank and a regular commercial bank at Longyearbyen, so you should be able to get money over the counter. Can't remember if there was an ATM in town. But you should be able to use your cad all over, as most shops will have cc machines. Saagar

Saagar for your info Maestro is sort of MC, har the same logo design, but with blue/red color and Maestro as name. It's a debit card and has a pin code.
