hi,

anyone know the best place to change currency at this crossing into Laos from Chiang Kong? Or should I expect that baht, kip, and USD are pretty much universally accepted here as they are in other parts of Laos?

Thanks!

I changed currency at the border crossing.Baht ,in small amounts , is accepted along the river.US Dollars is preferred for purchases over $us20.You won't need a lot of money because laos is cheap.I don't recall seeing any moneychangers /ATM in Luang Prabang ( but I wasn't looking either).Money changers and at least 1 ATM are by the river in Vientiane.

hi, I have heard that there was now one ATM in Vientiane....but, that'll be the last part of the Laos for me. As long as I can get by for a while with baht and USD, I'll be fine. I assume that I can find a place to change to the local currency once I get to Luang Namtha, where I'll be prior to Luang Prabang. (It's great that Laos is wonderful and cheap!!!)

many thanks for your answer!

I'd still pick up some money at the border crossing. I travel with so many different sources of money, secreted all over the place I've been confused with a bank. There's no joy in running short and I very nearly didin laos because everything closed early on New years Eve. laos is a lovely peaceful place.
regards
W
