| Izmir | Travrl to Izmir Posted: Sat March 4, 2006 01:09 PM UTC
We intend to go mid April. The plan is to take an hotel in Izmir (we like big cities) and every day (with a rented car) to travel to another close/semi close destination (Ephsos, Pergamon, etc').
Is there a problem with driving around (trafic, bad roads, etc') Any other recomendation? |

A nice idea. There is no driving problems, no bad roads. But you must be cereful while driving. Because Turkey is a strage land for you. You are not used to the conditions. You must be cereful when it rains. The first rain drops can make the autoway slippery. Don't forget to visit Didim (Didimia)Pirene and very important for you The Sard near Salihli (Sardes)In Sard there is the ruins of a great Sinanoge restaured in recent years. If you dare a 4-5 hour drive visit Pamukkale (Hierapolis) near Denizli. It is a world wonder. Sardes is on the autoway to Denizli.
Have a nice time Come happily and return happily.

Turkey is very easy to drive round.
All the roads are in very good condition. Give yourself half a hour of steady driving to adjust to the local conditions. In the larger town and cities, driving is like anywhere else, slow moving. In the country just be careful of the farm traffic, there are a lot of slow moving tractors and trailers. I think Turkey is a great place for a driving holiday, so much to see and do. Enjoy.

Ricky has wright."In the country just be careful of the farm traffic, there are a lot of slow moving tractors and trailers." Especially farm trackwagons don't have red lights behind. During night drives be cereful.

Shalom,
Be careful about the aggressive drivers on the roads. If you notice that someone is trying to struggle you, just slow down and let him go. Roads are not so bad in Turkey, but still worse than in developed countries. The main problem is people. Number of traffic victims is very high in Turkey, higher than many East European countries those have much worse road conditions. I have stayed in Jerusalem and travelled all Israel. Roads are not so different from here. You have a good plan. I would do the same. Izmir as a base, many beautiful towns and ruins to visit around. Enjoy your trip. Alper.
