| Prefecture of Samos | Ireon/Herklio any info? Posted: Fri March 3, 2006 11:10 AM UTC
Hello everyone!
Has anyone been in Ireon village? How is the village? Is there any shops/grocery shops in the village? How is the beach? Is it shallow/good to swim (not very deep suddenly/no big waves or currents)? is there any scooter rentals in the Ireon village? Is it easy to get to the Pythagorion? Is the airport too close (is very noicy area since there are the airport so close)? |

Hi
Iīve been there. It was a few years back and my memory is a bit sketchy (and my visit was only short), but here is what I remember: i) The postcard that I bought showing Ireon seafront looks a lot better than the reality. The beach is better than the one at Potokaki Beach where I stayed, though; ii) The village is quite big and relatively lively. Quite a few bars and quite a few backpackers. Plenty of shops etc; iii) Pretty easy to get to Pythagorion. I was staying at Potokaki Beach and walked to both Pythagorion and Ireon from there. I wouldnīt recommend walking from Pythagorion to Ireon though - the walk from Potokaki was a good few km and pretty tiring in the heat of the day. Youīll be able to get a taxi, no worries. iv) Itīs far enough away from the airport not to have to worry about the aircraft noise. Potokaki Beach is right by the airport, and suffers from a fair bit of noise, but both Ireon and Pythagorion are far enough away. Itīs a reasonable place, but a poor alternative to many other resorts in the Greek islands in my humble opinion. Jonathan

No worries :-)
If I remember correctly, you were looking at Rhodes and Kos as well. Did you make a decision on where to go?

Hi!
Yeah...We were thinking Rhodes+Kos also... But Samos seems more quiete island. And more green! :) So we are 90% sure that we will go to samos for our holiday :) And we take Ireon since we did find nice+cheap accomodation from there :)

Hi
You're right - Samos is quieter and greener than either of Kos or Rhodes. There are some nice walks overlooking Pythagorion. Pythagorion is a nice picturesque town with some good restaurants and cafes around the harbour. Ireon seemed like a really laid back resort, and the beach was better than at Potokaki. Unfortunately, I visited Samos in the days before I had a digital camera so I only have a handful of photos. I also spent the whole week in the south-east corner of the island, so I never got to the see the green interior. Have a great time! Jonathan

I wouldn't have thought the water would be cold. It was warm enough at Potokaki Beach when I visited in August.

Hi!
Ok, it is relief to hear the water isn't freezing cold :) We just did get bit nervous about the water.... Do you know, is the Papa Beach near Ireon village?

I'm not sure. The name doesn't ring a bell. There are lots of small beaches around the coast, so Papa Beach could be one of those near Ireon.
I've just had a flick through my Samos guidebook. There is no mention of Papa Beach, but the map just tends to label the towns and resorts rather than the individual beach names.

Apparently, Papa Beach is near Ireon. I've just found this website that you might find useful:

It does indeed look a lovely beach! :-)
As you say, it is only small and from my experience the best beaches in Greece have a tendency to become rather crowded in the summer months. The Greek islands have a lot of beaches where the sea is that unbelievable turquoise blue colour. That is one of the reasons that I love Greece so much!

Do you know, is the water that blue/clear all around the beach from Ireon to Potokaki? Or is the Papa Beach only beach near Ireon with that amazing color?

The sea at Potokaki Beach isn't as blue as that. It is clean and clear, but it doesn't have that bright turquoise appearance. Similarly, at Ireon the sea is clean and clear, and a bit more blue than at Potokaki, but not turquoise.

Hi!
And thank you so much for the info :) But at least the water is clear, not murky/dark? Do you know, is there a river near Ireon village? And is there turtles living in the river?

Yes - the water is clean and crystal clear right along the coast. Some areas are more turquoise than others, but there are no dark, murky parts! :-)
I don't know anything about a river or any turtles I'm afraid.

Ok...
Thank you very much again :) Yeah... It is most important that the water isn't dark/murky :) And it is always big pluss if the color is blue/turgoize. One our big dream is to swim in turquize ocean :)

The sea is clean and clear around most of the Greek islands. My favourite beach in the Greek islands is Agios Prokopios on the island of Naxos. If you look at my Naxos page, the main picture on that page is of Agios Prokopios beach and you can see just how blue the sea is!
I'm just flicking through my Samos guidebook and there are lots of super beaches that I never got the chance to visit, eg: Psili Ammos; Plaka; Glykorizo; Lemonakia; Tsambou They all have lovely clear blue sea! :-)

There should be lots of nice walks in the area. I walked from Potokaki to Ireon which was quite a nice walk. The best place for walking was in the hills above Pythagorion - some wonderful views from up there! :-)

Hi
I don't know anything about the fires personally, but I've has a quick look online and found some information: http://gps.virgin.net/travel/resortfinder/viewresort?id=301 Reading the reviews on the above site, it would seem that the fires which occurred in 2000 were widespread and damaged a lot of greenery - but were not as damaging as the press reported at the time. I visited in 2001 and I don't remember particularly noticing any fire damage. I think you will enjoy reading the reviews on the link that I posted above, there are several from people who have stayed in Ireon and recommend it highly! :-)
