Gansu Sheng What crop is it
Posted: Thu March 2, 2006 07:42 AM UTC
We group of 10 persons want to visit Gansu Sheng and adjoining areas in coming summer. We are fond of traveling. There are long, big and shining yellowish green area down small villages called Minle,Shunhua and Dunle on Google earth planet(38.06 -38.16 N & 101.01-101.14 E Elev 9000-9153 ft). It seems near Qilian mountains. It is at the border of Gansu Sheng & Qinghai Sheng provinces. This seems like rice, barley or mustard plantations, but could it be so large?. It looks lush shining green, evenly uniform well planned plantations. Could you please give us information on this ; what is this place, how big is it, its name and how to reach there.
I shall wait for your response

Hi VT friend,
Thanks for your quick response While the area under question 38.10-101.27 is amazingly wonderful. It has a mystic mixture of green and beautifully planned plots green in colour. I saw it on google earth, it is quite near quinghai lake on the border of gansu Province. I have been struggling for last one month to find it. it is really nice topic of research, otherwise I have to visit it in coming summer.
Please do find time and see and get involved, I assure you shall enjoy it.

I got a response from a scientist from PRC. He mentions that the land on the north slope of the mountains south of Zhangye is quite fertile. And yes, it can easily be that big. When they went through that area in the summer of 2004 they traveled to Matisi, which is close to where we are looking into. He says he was struck with how agriculturally productive that part of Gansu is.
have just spent two months in Gui De, along the Yellow River, at 36.03 N,
101.27 E. Although it is more than 2,000 feet lower in elevation than the
area in question, the surrounding countryside rises sharply from the river,
and wheat is the main crop, though not the only one. Where he has been in
the Yellow River Basin the climate, he believe, is slightly warmer than it is
on the north slope of the Qilian, but as I suggested, it could also be
barley or rape.
